If the plan proposed in H.R. 1592 (The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007) is passed in Congress (scheduled to be voted on May 3, 2007), according to its opponents, it will severely hinder religious freedoms, including the ability to openly express the
doctrines and beliefs of the Christian faith.
According to Rev. Ted Pike of the
National Prayer Network, the proposal introduced by Representative John Conyers - a Democrat from Michigan - would grant special rights to homosexuals, transvestites and transsexuals. Glen Lavy, an attorney for
Alliance Defense Fund argued in a
letter to the members of Congress that "H.R. 1592 is a discriminatory measure that criminalizes thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, and provides greater protection to some victims than others simply because of status, whether chosen or inherent. The bill has the potential of interfering with religious liberty and freedom of speech ..." Here's just one potential example: A pastor who speaks against the practice of homosexuality, perhaps as simply as preaching from Leviticus 18:22 or 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, could be indicted for the federal hate crime of ‘attempting to intimidate.’
What happened to America? I thought we had religious freedoms here, not to mention free speech? What do you think? Is it a crime to be a Christian now? Should believers be prosecuted for expressing the convictions of their faith?
Poll: Do You Think H.R. 1592 Will Undermine Religious Freedoms?
- Yes. I think it will make the expression of faith in the Bible a criminal offense.
- No. I think it will better protect Americans against hate crimes.

This proposed legislation is a violation of a person’s right to religious freedom. It’s totally intolerant and a clear attack on people of faith. It also shows plainly that the “liberals” love everyone until someone disagrees with them. Christians are being targetted but what about other faith groups that preach against Homosexuality as well? Are they subject to punishment? I urge everyone to go to the ACLJ, not the ACLU who must be doing an extended version of the happy dance for joy right about now, and tell them that you are against this unConsitutional outrage. If they’re pulling this crap now, what are they gonna do in ‘08?
I forgot to give the address for the ACLJ, which stands for the American Center for Law and Justice.

Mary, you’ve once again swallowed hook, line & sinker the propoganda of the Religious Reicht.

A few quotes from the WorldNetDaily.com article: Christians in bull’s-eye in new ‘hate crimes’ plan by Bob Unruh:
Lavy’s analysis noted that in New Jersey already it is a “hate crime” to communicate in a manner likely to cause “annoyance or alarm.”
At William Patterson University in New Jersey, a student-employee was formally reprimanded for saying he didn’t want to receive promotional e-mails advocating for the lesbian lifestyle, because that sent a message of a “threat,” …
Nevertheless, the entire faculty at Ohio State University’s Mansfield campus apparently agreed that university librarian Scott Savage was guilty of threatening behavior for a simple statement in 2006. His ‘threat’? Recommending four books for freshman reading … The recommendation made three professors feel “unsafe” on campus and the entire faculty voted to file charges of sex discrimination and harassment against Mr. Savage for “anti-gay hate mongering,”
It is my opinion that these kinds of state cases don’t need further reinforcement and federal funding as proposed in H.R. 1592.
This proposed legislation is in itself a hate crime because it is targeting a group of people based on their religious views.
why is it always the Christians being targeted?
Preaching against lying is not sin. Lying is a sinful BEHAVIOR. Homosexuality is a sinful BEHAVIOR– as is ALL sexual activity outside of the bounds of marriage. I don’t care who or what you “do it with.”
The reason we become so incensed about this particular arena of sin just simply proves Pauls words in 1 Corinthians 6:13-20, which includes this enlightening phrase, ” all other sins a man (person) commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.”
By the way, good preaching always brings about “conviction” in both the audience and the preacher. When we are unwilling to adimit our sin, that conviction will feel like “condemnation.” When we feel we are being condemned, we take it as a threat, and respond in anger and defensiveness.
Surely this is not the fault of the preaching, but that the message of the preaching hit “home” with us.
An edit of my previous post: I meant that preaching that lying is a sin is not wrong nor it is condemnatory. Lying is a behavior. Homosexuality is a behavior. I was trying to draw a parallel.
Thanks for allowing me to clarify my words.
Am I missing something? Everything I see in this bill is about what happens when hate (as the bill defines it) is involved with a crime. Which means simply preaching that homosexuality is a sin is in no way illegal. Beating a man while yelling that homosexuality is a sin probably would be considered a hate crime, but not because the offender believes that homosexuality is a sin. Instead, the crime is hurting someone specifically because of their sexual orientation.
In that same vein, someone beating another person while yelling “Christians are bigots!” would also be considered a hate crime for the same reasons: the perpetrator was hurting another person because the victim was of a particular religion.
We have the right to believe whatever we want, from the obvious to the absurd. We do not have the right to commit crimes in the name of those beliefs, even if the beliefs are informed by religion.
This whole article is demonstrative of how hateful and bigoted Christians are. Their views have no place in this country.
Most Christians are not bigots or hateful. If they are it’s because they are ignorant and are sinning as well; we are called to be loving. However, our Bible states that homosexuality is a sin. It is a sin because it is sex apart from the kind of love and covenant that God intended: a marriage between one man and one woman. Any true christian would recognize that heterosexual sex outside of marriage is equally sinful. We are not called to yell at and gang up on a single sinful group of people but to speak the truth and show ALL sinful people why God would want what he wants. He can and will redeem anyone.
Oh no! Not another law that can help increase peace between people, what ever shall we do?
Easy…let it go.
Condemning someone because they’re in love can be considered a hate crime…but what’s this…oh yeah! You live in America. Of course.
Silly me…and here I thought America was trying to become more accepting of other people regardless of race, gender, religion OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION!
All I can say is thank the Lord I live in England, where we are FAR MORE accepting of people no matter who they love…
