Farewell to Tammy Faye

Sunday July 22, 2007
After a long and painful battle with colon and lung cancer, on Friday, July 20, 2007, Tammy Faye (Bakker) Messner passed away at her home near Kansas City, Missouri. Tammy Faye is best known for her former years as a Christian televangelist and talk show host. She was married to Jim Bakker and co-hosted The 700 Club and the PTL Club for more than two decades (1966 - 1987). She is also well known for her trademark use of heavy eye makeup.

Jim and Tammy Bakker divorced while he was in prison after being convicted of fraud and conspiring to commit fraud related to the PTL management scandal in 1989. In 1993 Tammy married Roe Messner, a family-friend and fellow PTL business associate. Messner was also imprisoned from 1996 to 1999 for bankruptcy fraud charges related to the same scandal.

Tammy Faye continued her television career. In 1996 she co-hosted the syndicated talk show, The Jim J. and Tammy Faye Show with Jim J. Bullock and in 2004 she played a role in the reality television series, The Surreal Life. She also made appearances on several talk and television shows, including Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael, The Drew Carey Show, Prime Time, and many more.

Tammy's last television appearance was on Larry King Live, just days before her death. Though her life was tested by fame, scandal and suffering, Tammy Faye never lost her faith in God. During the interview with Larry King her labored breathing made speaking difficult, yet her spirits seemed high. She said, "I talk to God every single day, and I say, 'God, my life is in your hands and I trust you ...'" To her fans she said, "... I genuinely love you and I genuinely care ... I want to see you in heaven some day. I want you to find peace. I want you to find joy."

In a statement on his Web site, Tammy's son, Jay Bakker said, "She had a very peaceful death and is no longer in pain." Tammy Faye was 65 years old.

I am so glad her suffering is over. She went through a lot. No matter what one thinks of her behavior during the PTL madness, she didn’t deserve that kind of pain.

I was very blessed to have seen Tammy on the Larry King show Friday night -what an inspiration and true soldier of Christ. This 65 lb. suffering cancer patient just “glowed” with the love of Jesus and I know every single person who witnessed that show found such inspiration and joy just listening to her wisdom and love. What a God-centered Christian whom we can all learn from. Our prayers and condolences to her wonderful family.
