As a child my husband had a favorite prayer that he used to say at night before going to sleep. His sister taught him a new twist on this traditional children's bedtime prayer. It went something like this:
-
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray, dear Lord, my soul to keep.
If there's a man beneath my bed,
I pray, dear Lord, he'll bump his head.

What ever happened to “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I awake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, bless this bed that I lie on. Four corners to my bed, four angels around my spread. One to watch, one to pray, and two to guide my soul away….”? There is a bit more to this prayer, I think, but I cannot remember it. Does anyone?
i haven’t hear it past “i pray the Lord my soul to take.” i do know that there a lot of parents out there (myself included) who feels the “if i should die before i wake” part is a bit scary for a small child. We pray “Now i lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. Angels watch me through the night so I may wake with morning light.”

I’ve never heard that version. How cute.
Now I lay me down to sleep
I Pray Thee Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray thee Lord my soul to take
If I should live for another day
I Pray Thee Lord to guid my way
amen.
