Weekly Prayers & Poems - Amazing Grace

Thursday January 22, 2009
This week's post is a prayerful Christian hymn called Amazing Grace. Penned by the Englishman John Newton (1725-1807), this enduring hymn is one of the most well-known and beloved spiritual songs ever written. Newton, once the captain of a slave ship, converted to Christianity after an encounter with God during a violent storm at sea. He eventually became an ordained minister in the Church of England.
    Amazing Grace
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed.
