What is True Love?

Friday February 13, 2009
My parents are in their seventies now. After more than 50 years of marriage, they are still in love! I think it's safe to call their love a "forever love."

They still hold hands and make each other giggle. For their 50th wedding anniversary, I wrote a poem for them, in honor of their enduring love. They taught me and my four siblings a lot about love. In fact, each of us are married, in love, and committed to making it last forever. We too have found true love.

My parent's relationship is not perfect. They still have arguments and get on each others' nerves at times. But their love goes deeper than just romantic love, it's a reflection of God's love (Ephesians 5:25). It is so powerful because it points to the one and only perfect example of true love - God.

The Bible says in 1 John 4:16, "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him." (NLT) God is the author of love (1 John 4:8). His perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). God demonstrated his unconditional love by sending his son, Jesus Christ, to sacrifice his life for us (Romans 5:8). Now that is true love!

On this Valentine's Day, as you express appreciation to your loved ones, it's fitting also to spend some time with your perfect true love, the Lord God.
