Why is Good Friday "Good?"

Saturday April 4, 2009
Each year at Easter, I like to ask this question and consider the interesting and evoking answers I receive from readers.

But first let's answer the question, "What is Good Friday?" Good Friday is always observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death by crucifixion of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Many Christians spend this day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.

So, you might wonder then, why is Good Friday "good?"
Here's how members of the Christianity Forum responded to the question:

"I believe it is called 'Good' as the substitute word for 'Holy' and 'Great' just like 'good day' comes from 'God's day.'" - David

"It was 'good' for it was God's provision for those who are 'not.'" - booktree

"It's good to set aside a day to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for our sins to be washed away. A time to think of our past, present and future." - Kay

(1) Benny says:

Good Friday is “good” because even though Jesus suffered, he did it for us, to take away our sins. It’s the ultimate act of love. What could be more “good” than that!

I always thought it should be called “fairly nice friday”. It’s not always good, sometimes it rains.

(4) Ch Rev.Jack Stanley (UMC) says:

It is “good” in every sense of the word. Most American’s equate goodliness with happiness, and that is a large fallacy. Good comes from and is synonymous with God. The root words are the same. It is an old English adage. Much like out common greeting, “Goodbye” comes from the English phrase, “God be with ye.”

It is good also in what God through Christ does for humanity. In this context it is synonymous with holiness. It is “good” if only because God enacted it, thus by definition. Sacrificiality is the greatest good. “No greater love have people than this, than to lay down their lives for their friends.”

(5) Chitranka says:

The good thing about Good Friday is that it is an opportunity to recognize what is wrong with us, accept God’s offer of forgiveness in the form of Christ dying for our sin on the cross, and then to invite God to be with us, heal us, and bless us.

(6) Steve says:

I have read that some think Good Friday is a derivative from an original “God’s Friday.” This would commemerate the day God gives up his Son for his love of the world and all of his creation,

(7) Mikes@Your Daily Word says:

It’s called Good Friday coz even Jesus died on this day which is supposedly bad but the truth is it was a Victory against the enemy! Jesus had finally defeated death.

(8) Ann says:

It’s good because Jesus accomplished what He came to do, to reconcile us back to God. It’s good because it was all paid for when He said, ‘It is finished!’.

(9) Gerald says:

It is good because it is the day where the sinful nature of man is on full display via crucifying an innocent man — good because in Jesus rising from the death delivered, we see that Jesus is Lord above all sin, all men, all cruelty, and for us. Never had a day before or since shown such love triumph over such cruelty. It is good because it reveals the extent of God’s great love for us.

(10) Dan Pallat says:

On Good Friday, Jesus repaid our huge debt to God for our sins…a debt so large that there was no hope that we would ever be able to repay it ouselves. Jesus, therefore, substituted himself for us to wipe the slate clean. That is why it is called “Good” Friday. The worst day in Jesus’ life was our best day. Quite a paradox.

(11) Greg says:

“Good” comments. I’ll add that it was a terrible day. It only become good 2 days later, when Jesus overcame death itself.

(12) Pekka K says:

I tend to subscribe to the name having an origin other than the word “good”. In the Finnish language the Friday is called a “Long Friday”. I think this is more appropriate since it must have been a long day indeed for Jesus. Easter Sunday might be a good day to focus on the salvation he brought us. Friday should perhaps be spent reflecting on the suffering Christ endured.

(13) john says:

He dies on Good Friday. He comes back to life on Easter…..It’s ‘good’ because he did such a ‘good’ thing for us by taking our punishment…….but the word ‘good’ has lost a lot of it’s strength. It really means ‘great’ or ‘wonderful’ in today’s vernacular.

Ben, Jesus did not come back to life on Good Friday. He was risen on Easter. He died and three days later he came back to life. I
