What's the first word that comes to mind when you think of Christmas? I trust it's not shopping or debt! Rather, I hope it's more closely related to the spiritual significance of the season, such as
Jesus or
Immanuel. Perhaps the image that forms in your mind at the mention of Christmas is a
nativity scene, with shepherds and
magi bringing gifts of
frankincense, gold, and
myrrh.
I thought it would be fun to learn the origins of terms like hallelujah and Epiphany, and how these words came to be associated with the Christmas season. I started a list, but remember, it's an ongoing project to be updated with new Christmas words each year. If you have a suggestion to add, please leave a comment below.
