Dangerously sacred, the Ark was placed within the Holy of Holies, concealed by a heavy veil. No unclean or sinful person could look upon the Ark or handle it irreverently and live.

While the Ark figured prominently in Israel's history, it eventually disappeared from the biblical record. Because of the mysterious power and intrigue associated with the Ark, its whereabouts have been hotly speculated and an inspiration for a blockbuster film plot.
