In recent years, Christmas angels have become a favorite subject of holiday movies and Christmas books for children and adults alike. Yet, most of these contemporary angels are nothing like the original Christmas angel, Gabriel.
At key moments in the biblical drama, Gabriel made appearances. In the Old Testament, he appeared to the prophet Daniel to interpret a vision and impart wisdom about the unfolding of future events. In the New Testament, the angel Gabriel was chosen to be God's messenger, announcing the birth of the long-anticipated Messiah, Jesus Christ. First, he visited Zechariah, and then the virgin Mary.
Most likely, Gabriel is the same Christmas angel who, along with a vast host of heavenly beings, appeared to the shepherds tending their flocks out in the fields. There he deliver the joyous good news of the birth of Christ our Lord.
