Who's Who in Scripture - Philip the Apostle

In each of the listings of the 12 disciples, Philip's name appears fifth. Scripture indicates that Philip was one of the first to follow Jesus Christ, and he wasted no time calling others, like Nathanael, to do the same.

The name Philip is Greek and means "lover of horses." Although little is known about him after the ascension of Christ, Bible historians believe Philip preached the gospel in Phrygia, in Asia Minor, and died a martyr there at Hierapolis.

A Graduate's Prayer

Dear Lord,

As I look toward the future
Bright hope conducts this prayer,
For I know the plans you have for me
Were wrought with divine care.

Holy Spirit, lead me.
Let me run at your command,
Yet be still and know that You are God
When trouble's close at hand.

Your Word will be a lamp for me,
A guide to light my way,
A solid place to set my feet,
A compass when I stray.

This Week�s Testimony: My Life Was Miserable

Today's Christian testimony is a dramatic before and after story of salvation about a young women who endured a childhood of physical, mental, and sexual abuse at the hands of her father. Tammy's memories include the time her dad pointed a gun at her head for waking up her brother. Even worse for Tammy was watching the ill-treatment her brother suffered. The pain of abuse took its toll on Tammy. She realized she needed a Savior. Tammy's faith in God has made all the difference in her life.

Persecution Fuels the Spread of Christianity

The stoning death of Stephen in Acts 7 was a defining moment in the early Christian church. Stephen, one of the original deacons in the newly organizing group of believers, became the first recorded Christian martyr. His angry mob of accusers sought to wipe out the spread of Christianity, but instead achieved the opposite result.

Escalating persecution forced many disciples to flee Jerusalem, dispersing the church and launching the gospel into Europe and beyond. The stoning of Stephen also set in motion the dramatic conversion of the Apostle Paul, one of the most influential voices in the history of Christianity and the gospel's most ardent messenger.
