Praying together as a couple and praying individually for your spouse is one of the most powerful weapons you have against divorce and for building intimacy in your marriage.

Key Verse: Galatians 6:9–10

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

Several years ago, my husband and I made a commitment to read the Bible and pray together in the morning. It took us 2.5 years to get through the entire Bible, but it was a tremendous marriage-building experience. Praying together daily not only brought us closer to each other, it deeply reinforced our relationship with the Lord.

Praying together as a daily practice develops spiritual intimacy. If you're unsure how to get started praying as a couple, here are three Christian prayers for couples and spouses to help you take the first steps.

Married Couple's Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this life together, for the gift of our love, and the blessing of our marriage. We give you praise and thanks for the joy you've poured into our hearts through this bond of love we share.

Thank you for the contentment of family, and the happiness of our home. May we always treasure the experience of loving each other in this holy union. Help us to remain forever committed to our vows, the promises we made to each other, and to you, Lord.

We need your strength daily, Lord, as we live together with the goal of following, serving, and honoring you. Develop within is us the character of your Son, Jesus, that we might love each other with the love he demonstrated—with patience, sacrifice, respect, understanding, honesty, forgiveness, and kindness.

Allow our love for each other to be an example to other couples. May others seek to imitate our commitment to marriage and our dedication to God. And may others be inspired as they see the blessings we enjoy because of our faithfulness in marriage.

Let us always be a support to one another—a friend to listen and encourage, a refuge from the storm, a companion to lean on, and, most importantly, a warrior in prayer.

Holy Spirit, guide us through the difficult moments of life and comfort us in our grief. May our lives together bring glory to you, our Savior, and testify of your love.

In the name of Jesus, we pray.

Amen.

Spouses' Prayer for Each Other

Lord Jesus,

Grant that I and my spouse may have a true and understanding love for each other. Grant that we may both be filled with faith and trust.

Give us the grace to live with each other in peace and harmony.

May we always bear with one another's weaknesses and grow from each other's strengths.

Help us to forgive one another's failings and grant us patience, kindness, cheerfulness, and the spirit of placing the well-being of one another ahead of self.

May the love that brought us together grow and mature with each passing year. Bring us both ever closer to You through our love for each other.

Let our love grow to perfection.

Amen.

Spouses' Prayer

O Lord, Holy Father, omnipotent and eternal God, we give you thanks and we bless your holy name.

You created man and woman in your image and blessed their union so that each would be for the other a help and support.

Remember us today.

Protect us and grant that our love may be in the image of the devotion and love of Christ for his Church.

Grant us a long and fruitful life together, in joy and in peace, so that, through your Son and in the Holy Spirit, our hearts may always rise to you in praise and goods works.

Amen.
