7 Great Patriotism Bible Verses for September 11

A patriot is any person who loves and defends his or her country. In the United States, Patriot Day is a national day of service and remembrance marking the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our nation. As you remember those who died and the heroes who responded with sacrifices of compassion, take courage with these words of hope and comfort from Scripture.

Patriotism Bible Verses

The book of Psalms contains beautiful poetry originally meant to be sung in Jewish worship. Hundreds of Psalms speak of human tragedy and contain some of the most uplifting verses in Scripture. We can turn to the Psalms for comfort:

In you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. (Psalm 25:2-6, NIV)

Psalm 119 celebrates the powerful Word of God, and this verse illustrates its protective component. God's Word is a refuge and shield. We can run to it and find hope for our souls:

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. (Psalm 119:114)

God doesn't promise a world without trouble, but he does promise to care for all who are in distress. He stays with us to heal our broken hearts and bandage our wounds:

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

Remember God's Compassion

Even in our deepest despair and bitter affliction, a remarkable transition in attitude often takes place when we turn and remember the Lord. Our basis for renewed hope in tragedy is God’s great love for us. As Americans, we witnessed this transition from despair to renewed hope as our nation came together to heal:

... my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:20-23)
I trembled inside when I heard all this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror. I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us. Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vine; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. The Sovereign LORD is my strength! He will make me as surefooted as a deer and bring me safely over the mountains. (Habakkuk 3:16-19)

Those who put their faith in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, have the hope of eternal life. Death will not result in decay. The Lord's faithful will receive the crown of life:

"I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay..." (Acts 2:25-27)

God Works Through All Things

Our life in Jesus Christ is based on God's good purposes for us. And God's plan includes suffering. We may not understand why we experience tragedies like 9/11, but we can know that God has a good purpose he's working out through these trials. When we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, we can trust that God is at work in all things—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Nothing happens outside of his plan; nothing escapes him. For this reason, many Christians find this to be one of the greatest verses in the Bible:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose ...
If God is for us, who can be against us? ... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ...
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:28-39)
