Feeding the Multitude
- Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1972 – My boyfriend and I were going to get married on board the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California in a few weeks, so we didn’t have any money for a dinner at home. I called other family members who couldn’t afford to cook their Thanksgiving dinner, so we all put together the most wonderful meal. We had thirteen family members and two neighborhood boys who didn’t have a family at our makeshift table we setup in my mother’s front room. I now know Jesus put us together that year with five loaves and two fish. We didn’t know if we would have enough food for everyone to eat, but we had more than we needed that year. Thank God I had two pictures left in my Polaroid camera. All family members who see these pictures and were there at that table, remember it was the best Thanksgiving meal. My scrapbook holds these two pictures along with the story for future generations in our family.

A Very Different Thanksgiving
- Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday! In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina demolished our home with 9 feet of water, and after returning home, we lived in a 35 foot camping trailer in our driveway for months with 9 people, 3 dogs and a cat. Thank goodness for the Red Cross trucks that would drive by with food and water everyday to nourish us after we worked daily trying to rebuild. There were no grocery stores rebuilt, so food and clothing was donated to everyone by the wonderful volunteers of our great country. After gutting our home and throwing out anything that we found that was left that we treasured, it was November, and I was determined to have a Thanksgiving dinner! We were given a turkey and cooking utensils and finally had electric hooked up, so I cooked a turkey in a crock pot, had instant mashed potatoes and a fruit salad in our garage, which at that point was just studs. It was much simpler than in past years, but our family was together and that is what mattered most.

A Thanksgiving to Remember
- My best bud and I had never spent Thanksgiving Day together, so one year we decided to have both of our families come together and celebrate as one. We ate, we talked, like most families do, but the highlight of the evening (beside the food) was a photo shoot. We set up tripods in front of a beautifully decorated nook just off of the living room and brought lots of clothes to dress up in. All night long we "struck a pose." It was a Thanksgiving to remember.

Memory of Thanksgiving
- Every Thanksgiving my Mom would be sure I would get a turkey leg ... aside from that, the gravy ... and my cousins from NY. Also my older sister would come home from college.

Backwoods Thanksgivng
- We would all show up at my uncle's place about a week before Thanksgiving, about thirty of us, from as far as 1000 miles away. As each family unit showed up, everyone would pile out of the vehicle, and take ten minutes to unload all their guns and ammo into my Uncle's "long house" where we all would bunk. We would split into teams, each to our own specialty animal, (I always went on the Whitetail team), and before Thanksgiving day everything was shot, dressed, and ready to go into one of SIX ovens. On Thanksgiving Day, the 20 foot long solid oak table groaned with various meat, fish, and poultry, NONE of it bought in a store. I still do that today, but on a smaller scale.

Thank You Mama
- I remember staying up all night Thanksgiving and Christmas helping my Mother cook. She is gone on to Glory. I cherish that time.

Mom's Last Thanksgiving ...
- Mom had cancer and was dying. She lived in a nursing home. I was both heartfelt and gratified to be there (last year) to help feed her the Thanksgiving meal. We chatted and laughed. That was ALWAYS a GOOD thing. I miss her VERY MUCH and it made today a little rough to be without her. But, I feel she knew I did my best to ease her pain and to be together with her for this holiday. (Peace be with you, Mom! Love, P.)

Too Much Pie
- A few years ago, me and my brother went to Thanksgiving at our neighbor's house. They had a regular feast prepared: turkeys, pies, partridges, everything. My family never prepared anything fancy for Thanksgiving, and we had maybe a few guests for dinner, but no turkey, no pies. So, of course, my little brother was amazed and delighted at the food; he ate everything in reach of his short, six-year-old arms. He finally got hold of the pumpkin pie, consuming it piece by piece, finally polishing off almost half of it! He grew sleepier and finally nodded off, only to wake up and run to the bathroom to throw up! We still giggle at that one. His expression was so surprised!

Toto Got Turkey!
- We live in the country. About 15 years ago our dog ate our turkey! I had just taken the turkey out of the oven and was going to put it on the table on the deck to cool. Then I tripped going outside. When I tripped, the turkey flew right into our cat Betty's litter box. I began screaming, Ahhhhhhh! My daughter Vikki and dog Toto came running to see what the commotion was. Before I could bat an eye, Toto our little chubby beagle locked her teeth around the breast of the turkey and drug it backwards out of the litter box, out of the house, and down the road. We were all screaming and laughing at the same time. I tried to salvage dinner by taking a ham out of the freezer and microwaving it. Bad move, the ham turned into a rubber ball. Two days latter Toto came home. When she did she looked like she was going to explode. She laid on her back with her bloated belly to the sky. If you went over to comfort her, she farted at you. We never even found the turkey bones on our property.

Macy's Parade
- My favorite Thanksgiving memory is also my earliest memory! In my memory, I am sitting on my father's shoulders as we waited for the Macy's Parade to pass. Then the next thing I noticed was a giant balloon approaching---it was Mighty Mouse! I had never heard of Mighty Mouse before, but, from then on, I became obsessed with him. I was probably 2 years old, and I can't remember anything before this time---it's as if my all my memories begin with Mighty Mouse! I am 61 years old now, and for the record, I've lost my obsession with Mr. Mouse! LOL

Pumpkin Pie Challenge
- A valued friend challenged me to make a pumpkin pie and I combed recipe books. When I told another friend that I was stumped, she pulled out the Moosewood recipe book and found a really lovely pumpkin pie recipe. We went shopping and got all the ingredients together, baked the pie and I delivered it proudly to the challenger. He said it was the best he'd ever tasted.

Thank God Always
- In the year 2007, in March, I had a road accident and was admitted for surgery on my broken arm. Early in the morning I woke up to pray. So, I began by telling God how I appreciated that it was me who was injured in the accident and not my friends who were with me, since I knew God and I could bear with the condition through his grace. In the middle of my prayer, someone touched me. Wow! He was my neighbor in the hospital room. He said, "Why do you thank God, and he allowed this to happen to you? You are injured, broken arm, bleeding, still to be operated, have to pay dearly for the bill! Yet you stand here to thank God who was suppose to protect you and did not. What has come over you?" I told him, "Thank God always!" He smiled and left. Since then, he keeps on reminding me to thank God always. What a memory.

Missing Nana
- One Thanksgiving holiday my grandparents stayed at our new house for the weekend. The house was in the woods. On Thanksgiving morning my grandmother (Nana) decided to go for a walk. When we started missing her after a couple of hours, the whole family was very worried and began searching in the woods until, at last, we found her. She had lost her bearings and was a little flustered, but otherwise, okay. My grandmother had a wonderful sense of humor and loved laughing (and making the whole family laugh, too) about the time she got lost in the woods. That is a favorite Thanksgiving memory in my family.
