Readers Respond: How Do You Treat Halloween?

Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in our culture today, but because of its pagan roots, it presents a big challenge for Christian families. This poll shows that believers are strongly divided on how to treat Halloween. Maybe you feel freedom to observe the holiday, while others in your church boycott or ignore it. A number of Christians choose to celebrate through more positive and imaginative alternatives to Halloween, and still others take advantage of Halloween's evangelistic opportunities. Perhaps you can help another believer wrestling with the biblical questions of how to treat Halloween.

I Ignore It

I ignore Halloween. Just not into evil looking stuff. I like the rest of the holidays though.

Light of the World

How can you represent Jesus Christ as Light if Christians are wearing, organizing and representing Satan to the world?

Not in the Bible

Same as All Saint Days, both are not in God's letter (the Bible) and we should give Caesar what's Caesar.

You are biased. I couldn't read much of this article. You should have just researched and stated facts.

Halloween

I do not believe as a true Christian we should be celebrating Halloween. Just because some churches are calling it different names does not change what it is. Jesus when He entered the temple said they had made it into a den of thieves; just because it's at church does not make it right. If we celebrate the same thing with a different name, it remains what it is Halloween, there is no difference. So, if we are not of this world why are we part of this worldly celebration? I do not believe that pastors should allow the church to participate in any of these activities; if some of the congregation wants to do it, then let them do it on their own accord. The pastor must remember he (not the congregation) will be accountable for all he allows to go on. And about us using it as a way to reach people, well there are 365 days in a year, do we really need to participate in that one in order to reach people?

Foiled Again

You are all right! It is the devil's sole or should I say soul purpose to have us go knock on our neighbors doors while dressed as the little mermaids and ask for a snickers bar! You figured it out - you are just too smart! Satan wants your kids to have cavities! Ask any devil worshiper and they will tell you that's how they practice their craft - by dressing up in costumes and eating sweets - darn those diabolical evil-doers! Seriously, how sad it must be to live a life so full of fear!

Of Course I Celebrate It!

God, who can see into our hearts, will know if we are just having fun (something the Bible certainly doesn't forbid) or doing something darker, and if we're doing that we're probably doing it at other times too. Saying "Halloween is un-Christian" and waving Bible snippets about makes me think of Muslims arguing about whether something is haram or halal.

Small Foxes Ruin the Vineyard

God has called us to live in this world, but not to conform to the customs of this world. If the world celebrates Halloween that is their decision and we are no one to judge. Yet as children of light we should not be participating in this sort of event. Parents say its harmless for our kids to dress up, well those small doors that we open the enemy can come in and take advantage. The small foxes ruin the vineyard. We need to stop taking the Word of God so lightly and just accepting what we like and ignoring the rest. We ask ourselves, why don't we see God's supernatural provision in our lives? It's because of our lack of obedience. God tells us not to take any part in this pagan celebration, so by participating we are not obeying. God does not want partial obedience. He wants 100% obedience, not what we think is right or wrong, but what His Word says.

Hallelujah

We do treat the kids that come to our door with candy and a gospel tract.

If You Had a Short Time to Live ...

... How would you spend it? Consider this: would you (as a U.S. citizen or resident) have a day to "joyously" dress up as bin laden? Or if you tragically lost someone close right before Halloween, and would you put a gravestone in front of your door? Whether we see it or not, we ARE in a war (spiritual of course, I'm not advocating physical violence at all), and there are only two sides. "Teach us O Lord, how to number our days."

Halloween and Pagan Days

The Bible says nothing about serving any of these so called man made holidays. They are all wicked and are to capitalize off the people. Halloween is wicked, evil. That is one nite that people dress up and do evil, ie. terror, frighten and vandalize, they even snatch your child's candy and run! We are not to follow the doctrine of man and the ways of the world. Stop justifying your just getting candy and having fun. Its just easier for you people to conform to man's way and not YAHs. Did he not say my people perish from lack of knowledge. Read the word and study for yourself and quit following man who will lead you straight to hell.

Pleasing in God's Sight

I treat Halloween as just another day and think on "thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven" and this celebration would have no place in heaven and is not pleasing in God's sight.

The Thoughts and Motivation Behind It!

I always struggle with this one. I think that God knows our hearts, minds and spirits. I think if we are celebrating with evil and distortion then we are most defiantly in the wrong, however kids dressing up and trick or treating door to door is harmless, with the fun of being something cute or funny and collecting candy to last all year. We worship with our mind, body, and spirit! Not trick or treats and costumes.

If You Believe it's Still Okay, Then ...

Some Christian churches and leaders still go for it, celebrating the same day as the unbelievers do (dressing up in costumes for fun) during Halloween. Scary and not scary, look both ways the devil can imitate for the purpose of pushing through his evil plans. This is a spirit to spirit battle. Read Ephesians 6:12-13. It's a choice but disobedience to the Word will pay it's price. If Christians are unsure about their stand on this, find time to commune your spirit with the Spirit of God. Not that much time left to prepare for that Blessed Day of His coming. "In a twinkling of an eye" will not be enough to say "I'm sorry Lord, forgive me." So if you believe it's still ok... then this matter will be between you and the Living God.

Freedom in Christ?

I think the eating meat sacrificed to idols is a perfect illustration here. Ie, if you have never been a pagan or wiccan and have no interest in it, and are simply enjoying a big ol costume party with some old fashioned games and treats, then it is innocent fun. If you used to be a pagan and observe Halloween as a religious holiday and it causes you to feel uneasy or guilty or conflicted, then you need to find something else to do. And if you know a Christian bro/sis is made uneasy or conflicted over the matter you obviously ought not to invite them to join the festivities with you if you are doing so, and as a loving Christian bro or sis you might forgo some festivities to boost them up at that time of year with your fellowship and take them out for some fun that doesn't unsettle them in their faith.
